From UNCLE, dour Scot David McCallum became TV's newest sex symbol,
along with co-star Robert Vaughn. McCallum was literally mobbed on
promotional tours by thousands of fans waving placards reading: ALL THE
WAY WITH ILLYA K.
McCallum's reaction? "It's disquieting-that's what it is," said the
father of three, who married actress Jill Ireland seven days after they
were introduced. "With my Clavinist background and my deep Presbyterian
blood, with my stiff Scottish spine, to be told you're suddenly a 'sex
symbol' - it's just disquieting." But not for Illya: "He's a quiet
swinger. Nobody knows what Illya Kuryakin does when he goes home at
night."
